40,880 Times or (61,430 Times)

This morning I decided to make some gluten free waffles. They were delicious, but what a mess my kitchen was by the time I was done.

I just didn’t feel like cleaning up the kitchen. It is Sunday morning, so I read the paper. Then I reaiized that if I didn’t clean up the kitchen, nobody else would and I would wind up doing this anyway. I live with my sister who is three years younger than me. I have never ever seen her wash a dish.

So I got to thinking about just how many times I had ‘cleaned up the kitchen’. Using age 20 as a starting point, as that is when I got married, and estimating two times a day times 56 years comes to 40,880 times. If I figure three cleanups a day, then the number is 61,320 times.

The number is just an estimate. Many days there were three and four ‘kitchen cleanups and sometimes I was on vacation, but it averages out to more than forty thousand times. Probably closer to fifty thousand (as I am a baker). 40,881, must be my ‘limit’.

It’s kind of fun to figure out these statistics. Very easy using the calculator app on your smart phone. By the way using sixty years times seven days a week, I estimate I have made my bed 153,300 times. And I am the kind of person that has lots of pillows and stuffed animals on my bed.

Fix that scratch…

This isn’t exactly ‘crafts’, but did you know you can do lots of great things with nail polish besides polish nails?

If you have a little scratch on your car or bike, you may be able to find the perfect shade to match right in the Revlon aisle. There are so many nail polish shades now, including green, yellow, and all the metallics. Even navy blue and black.

And by the way, if you have lots of half bottles of nail polish sitting on a shelf, you can use these to decorate all sorts of things. You have a great waterproof enamel in lots of pretty colors. You could decorate a flower pot, or an old vase, or just look around you and see what needs sprucing up.

The other day I ‘painted’ a wish bone and it looks so cute sitting on my kitchen shelf. Another good idea is to use the nail polish to label things. I have several creams  in very similar brown jars with beige writing. Using a very bright shade, on  top in big letters, I drew in nail polish E for eye and N for night, D for day and so on.

I am very lucky to have the gift of total recall when it comes to color. That means that when I was trying to find the exact silver to match my 2014 Nissan in the Revlon department, I got it on the first try.

I always took it for granted that I could Always find the perfect match for something, even if I was hundreds of miles away or hadn’t seen the original item for a long time. Now I realize it is a gift, and I have used it many times in my life. Buying fabrics in France, when my living room and couch were on the other side of the world. Matching wallpaper to paint and towels to rugs was always fun and easy.

Back in the 60″s, if you got a scratch on your car, you just slapped a decal of a daisy on it.

*************************************************************************

Before you attempt to fix a scratch, clean the area with nail polish remover. If the scratch is very thin, use a paintbrush rather than the brush that comes in the bottle of nail polish. You are better off doing two or three thin coats, than one thick coat. Let dry well between coats. When you can rub your finger over the scratch and not feel a dent, you are done.

I know the car companies sell a little vial of touch up paint for each model. This is in their parts department. If the $7 nail polish hadn’t worked just fine, that was going to be my next step.

Savings Catcher

Have you seen the new promotion for Walmart? It is called Savings Catcher. You simply enter the twenty digit number from your Walmart receipt along with the date and if there is a lower advertised price in your area on any of the items you purchased, Walmart will issue you a gift card in the amount of the difference.

Now isn’t that a sweet idea? Except it has a few kinks. Such as, I did this very carefully last week after shopping at Walmart to the tune of $84. I got a quick email reply saying that it would take two to three days to process this request. And they would get back to me.

I forgot all about it, and then on day five realized that I hadn’t ever heard back, one way or the other. So I tried to contact Walmart again. Uh oh, wrong department. I tried again, wrong department. Finally they sent me an 866 phone number.

I almost didn’t call, as I knew from experience that when the phone was answered I would get a ‘All our customer service representatives are assisting other callers, your call is very important to us…blah blah blah’. Sure enough.

Finally Debbie got on the line. After giving her my phone number, email, zip code, name and then explaining the problem, I was not in a very good mood. Then I read her the twenty digit number on the receipt.

She asked if I was using the phone app. I told her I was using my desktop. She did mention that as so many people were trying this out, they were somewhat backed up, and the phone app had some bugs.

Someone thought of this idea and it is probably a good idea, in theory. You get a credit slip for $1.94, have to go to Walmart to use it. Probably in a set period of time, such as a week. Now you are at the store and it is highly unlikely that you will not spend a whole lot more than $1.94.

She assured me she would expedite this and someone would get back to me in three to five days.

I can hardly wait.

Buying Eggs

Is it just me, or has buying a dozen eggs become very complicated? For most of my life I have purchased Large Island Eggs.

The other choices were Medium Island Eggs and mainland eggs with a pink stamp on them.

Now there is Organic, natural, brown shells, raised without  pesticides, hormones and antibiotics, grass fed, free range and on and on. Same with chicken.

There is a whole system of raising chickens. The more humane and nice, the more per pound for the chicken and more also for their eggs.

One company even advertises that all their chickens have 108 square feet of space to roam around in. (I think a dozen of their eggs costs almost $8.)
And fresh air is a big factor in chicken happiness so they are ‘outside’ but the area is covered in netting.

There is an egg store here in Honolulu that is quite nice. It is called KaLei Eggs and is in Kaimuki on Wailae just before 12th Avenue. (You can park for free in back if you are less than twenty minutes).

Here they have more grades and sizes available. There is A and B grade. Small, medium, large and extra large. Eggs are sold in a flat of 30 and are probably fresher than the market. Sometimes they have blue eggs. One farmer here features those. Same taste.

Never fear, if you don’t understand all this, soon there will be an app for that.

Great Customer Service

In this day and age, to get great customer service is such a surprise, I am writing a blog about it.

A couple of months ago I purchased a Living Social coupon for a full body pillow from REST bamboo. It was regularly $199, but it was only $49. Shipping was $14.95RBP-1

It came and I loved it. Better than any body pillow ever. Very heavy and firm and supportive. I highly recommend this product. The company has every style pillow. They are expensive, but terrific.

The pillow is 60 inches by 22.

The instructions said it could be washed in washer and dried in dryer on low. I did. And ruined it. No longer firm and heavy, but squishy.

Yesterday I wrote to the company to ask what to do. Today I got an email saying they are shipping me a new one at $0.00.

Just got the shipping confirmation. Wow. Can’t wait.

If you want a great body pillow this is IT. Very heavy and firm. Feels like leaning against a real body.

Good New Product

Being that I am 76 and look younger, people are always asking me what I do. I do tons of things, such as lots of creams and facial products. Over the years I have tried many many different brands and types of skin care.

Of course cleansing and toning twice a day goes without saying, And now with the Clarisonic facial cleaning system, that too.

Now with the advent of serums and gels, there is a whole new bevy of beauty products. Modern technology has improved the science of skin care dramatically.

When I was a young girl it was Noxema and Clearasil. Ponds cold cream was just about it. And for hair it was Prell. The only conditioner I used until I was thirty five was vinegar in water. Now there are shampoo aisles in the drug store and if you want a face cream, there are whole departments for that.I shop at Sephora online and they are always sending me samples of new products.512VhQ9hB7L

I tried one today (Peter Thomas Roth CC cream skin corrector and sun screen)  and it was so terrific I am actually going to purchase this ASAP. The tube of 1.7 oz. is $48 at Sephora, but Amazon has the entire kit (with a .5 oz tube) at $70. There are four of the same line of products and since the CC cream is so terrific, the other three are probably good too.

I tried the sample card of shades. The light to medium looked very good and provided nice coverage. No makeup necessary. But the medium to tan was better for me. I look healthier and more natural. I have on no other makeup at all.

This product is sort of an all in one with a very high Vitamin C factor. The fruit it is made out of has 30X more vitamin C than an orange. (Guess if you were stranded on a desert island and had this with you, you could have it for breakfast)

So this is also a good treatment for skin and encourages collagen production. The first photo below is me with zero makeup or anything on my skin. Also before I lightened my hair.  Second photo is with application of a few dots of the CC cream blended in. The only other makeup I am ‘wearing’ is my permanent’ makeup. Tattoo eye brows, eye liner (top and bottom) and lips. As you can see, it is a much softer look and creases around mouth and eyes are blurred.Photo on 8-9-14 at 12.26 PMPhoto on 8-24-14 at 12.42 PM
